Why should the batteries of a hearing aid be removed before placing it in a desiccant jar?

I know “to make them last longer”, but what is the technical reason?

Depends on the battery. A lot of batteries have a special conducting paste that allows the current to pass through the battery. This paste contains just enough water to allow this to happen. So, if you dry the battery out in a desiccator they probably wont work.
